Green Living at Tonsmeire Properties

Green Living at Tonsmeire Properties

Leading a more sustainable life is something a lot of us strive for, but don’t really know how to do. Things like going zero-waste or ditching our cars for only public transit might not fit your lifestyle, or the idea of greener living might just feel too overwhelming. It’s important to remember that if everyone does their part, no matter how small, we can make a big impact in the long run.

How Tonsmeire Properties Promotes Green Living

We know we aren’t perfect, but we’ve implemented some practices to help our rental communities be a little greener. One of the ways we do that is through green pest control and green landscaping at all properties. We focus on filling our communities with plants that are native to the area.

We also use low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint. The chemicals in paint let off gasses that are very harmful to people and the environment, so by using low VOC paint in our community, we can ensure there are less unstable chemicals released into the air. We also try to utilize as many greenhouse supplies as possible.

How Can You Do Your Part?

You can do your part to live a more sustainable life too. Here are a few things to incorporate in your daily life that will be better for the environment.

  • Recycle – a great way to help reduce the amount of waste in landfills is by recycling. Recycle whatever you can, whenever you can. Glass, cardboard, paper and even many plastics can be recycled.
  • Donate – another amazing way to reduce waste is by donating. Instead of throwing out old clothes, books, toys and home items, take them to your local donation center so they can be reused.
  • Reduce Plastic Use – reduce your plastic use by cutting back on items with plastic packaging and using reusable items when you can.
  • Buy in Bulk – one of the main sources of plastic is packing from food. Try buying in bulk and using reusable containers to reduce waste.
  • Go Reusable – swap out single-use items like grocery bags, straws, zip lock bags and plastic cutlery for reusable items you can wash and use again and again.
  • Pick Up – if you do have non-recyclable waste, make sure you dispose of it properly and if you see trash laying about, pick it up and dispose of it.
  • Volunteer – find a local organization where you can volunteer doing things like planting trees or cleaning up litter.

No matter what you’re looking for, Tonsmeire Properties has it. With rental apartments in Daphne, Fairhope, Foley and Madison, we’ve got a place you can call home. Give us a call today or visit us online to start touring our beautiful properties and find the right fit for you.

Tonsmeire Community Gardens

Tonsmeire Community Gardens

Spring and summer are premium gardening months. It is the perfect time to grow a few veggies in planters, have an indoor herb garden or try your hand at a few small outdoor flower pots. At our Tonsmeire communities, we have community gardens!

Community gardens are just one of the many unique amenities our rental communities have to offer. The community gardens are a great way to spend time outdoors, get to know your neighbors and have some fun. Not sure you’ve got a green thumb? We’ve listed some tips to help you get started growing some green goodies.

Gone are the days of needing a yard to have a garden. Neighbors can work together to plant, harvest and maintain the crops all in a space that’s professionally built just for that purpose.

Try growing some hearty home staples like tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, celery or go bold and try spicy jalapeno peppers and crunchy kale. The possibilities are endless when you’ve got a dedicated community garden just steps from your door.

Is Maintaining/Harvesting a Garden Difficult?

The time and effort needed to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs depend on what the crop is. Different vegetables will need more water, attention, light and room than others. If you’re new to gardening, try low-effort crops with short harvest times to get you started.

When your crops are almost ready to harvest, you’ll want to check them often. Once ready simply snip off, dig up or pick your produce. Don’t let ripe produce sit too long, or it might go bad.

I’ve Harvested My Produce, Now What?

Bring your bounty inside and give it a good wash before eating. Sharing with neighbors or having a potluck at one of the barbeque and grill stations is a great way to enjoy the bounty in your community.

Why Rent a Furnished Apartment?

Why Rent a Furnished Apartment?

While looking at apartment homes you may have seen the option to rent a furnished apartment. You might be wondering why someone would pick that option. Furnished apartments can be a very cost-effective and convenient option for many folks. There are plenty of reasons to rent a furnished apartment, here’s just a few of them.

You Save on Moving Expenses

When you are moving, one of the biggest expenses is paying for a moving truck, packing supplies and movers. Moving large pieces of furniture is costly and frankly, kind of a pain. Now imagine you just have to move your personal things. You’ve got a few boxes and some suitcases and you’re on your way. Moving into a furnished apartment means you don’t have to move couches and beds and other big pieces or pay for the moving fees associated with owning such items.

It’s Perfect for Short Term Leases

Furnished apartments aren’t just convenient, sometimes they are a necessity. If you’re going to be living somewhere for a short period of time like a couple months or just a couple years it can be a huge hassle to move all your furniture or buy new furniture you will have to get rid of when you move again. Having a furnished apartment is a great way to feel completely at home no matter how long your lease is.

You Don’t Need to Worry About Furniture

Sometimes you move into a new apartment and your furniture doesn’t fit. Maybe your couch is the wrong size or you don’t have enough furniture to fill the place. By renting a furnished apartment you skip the hassle. You know the furniture fits, you know it looks great and you don’t have to worry about getting new stuff.

It’s Move in Ready

Unpacking after a move is cumbersome, but what if you just had to unpack a few boxes? That sounds like a dream doesn’t it? Well in a furnished apartment it’s ready! You just unpack your personal items and you’re good to go! With a furnished apartment you will save time and the headache of navigating piles of boxes and furniture in rooms that don’t belong.

How to Pick the Right Apartment for You

How to Pick the Right Apartment for You

Finding the perfect apartment can be a little tricky, but it can also be a lot of fun. While apartment hunting, you get to look at different locations, floor plans, unit sizes and layouts. Here are some tips to make your next apartment hunt go a little smoother so that hopefully you can find the place that feels like home.

Price – Budget is probably the number one thing to take into consideration when renting an apartment. You need to be able to comfortably afford your rent and expenses, so setting a budget and sticking to it will ensure you have money left over for the fun things in life.

Location, Location, Location – One of the most important factors when picking an apartment is the location. Whether you want to be close to shopping and dining, work, school, friends or family it’s key to pick the right spot. Also, look at the atmosphere of the area. Maybe you like to be right in the hustle and bustle of things, or maybe you want to live in a more quiet secluded area. Either way, it’s important to consider.

Size Matters – Choosing the right size apartment is very important. Size often dictates price, and if you are needing a specific unit size you will need to make sure the communities you’re looking at offer it. Some other things to take into consideration are inside your unit, like bedroom size, or the inclusion of walk-in closets or double sinks.

Amenities – These perks are built right into the cost of your rent, so it’s important to find ones you’ll actually use. If having a pool is important to you then look for a community with a professionally maintained pool. If you have a pet you’ll want to make sure your community is pet friendly and maybe you even want to tour ones with on-site dog parks. Whatever your amenity desires are it’s good to check them out before filling out an application.

Community – Renting an apartment means you’re becoming part of a community. Your community is made up of your neighbors on all sides. Make sure you feel comfortable in this new community and it’s a place you can thrive and grow. Many apartment communities offer things like resident events and socials to help you get to know your neighbors better. Who knows your new best friend might be right next door.
